Chris Egloff passes AWS Solutions Architect Associate certification!

Congrats to Chris Egloff!

Chris passed his Amazon Web Services Solutions Architect Associate Test this weekend!

Chris is a Senior Automation Engineer Leader here with Eplexity and has been on the front lines of building out several AWS customer environments. We are fortunate to have Chris on the team.  

Chris has brought discipline and ongoing enhancements to our AWS Managed Services practice by committing to detailed run books, container and cloud templates for our team mates and customers. Chris served in the US Navy for 5 years aboard the USS Maine Blue (SSBN) as a Information Security Engineer ( Thanks for serving Chris!) and recently graduated with a Degree in Computer Science.   

Chris will be taking the next 2 tests shortly for Dev/Ops and Sys/Admin for AWS Associate Certifications and has a goal to achieve Professional Status in 2018 for all 3 Certifications.  Please reach out to us if you have interest in joining our team!

CNCF – Welcome Amazon Web Services

CNCF is thrilled to officially welcome Amazon Web Services as our newest Platinum member. The Foundation and our projects will benefit from their many years of leadership in enabling enterprises to successfully adopt cloud computing and enormous expertise in cloud native technologies.

Adrian Cockcroft, Vice President of Cloud Architecture Strategy at AWS, and our newest board member, attended our in-person CNCF Governing Board strategy retreat a couple weeks ago in San Francisco. We appreciated him sharing his years of open source experience and jumping right into our discussions about how CNCF can best accelerate the development and deployment of Kubernetes and other cloud native technologies. Be sure to read Adrian’s Cloud Native Computing post for a deeper understanding of how AWS plans to contribute to the cloud native ecosystem.

With this news, and Microsoft joining CNCF as a platinum member last month, five of the five largest public cloud providers are now active members. Also on our governing board are most of the world’s biggest private cloud vendors. The combined industry momentum behind CNCF signals not only the value of Kubernetes and our other cloud native technologies but also underlines the Foundation’s commitment to making these technologies ubiquitous.

Just as businesses had to learn about virtualization, now they are figuring out how to leverage containers and run them in production. And that means adopting Kubernetes and cloud native technologies.

We’ve seen a strong shift from companies that were developing with containers and are now putting them into production. Two years ago less than 10 percent of enterprise decision makers said they were using a container orchestration tool.

Today, more than half are in production with container management and orchestration software, according to a May 2017 451 Research report. The firm also found Kubernetes is the most widely used orchestration tool, with 43% of respondents saying they used Kubernetes and 32% saying that it is their primary orchestration tool. This is an increase from last year, when Kubernetes was the primary tool of only 27% of the sample.

These numbers are just the starting point. We’re excited by the work CNCF is doing on the next generation of cloud native technologies and hope you are as well.  Becoming a member is easy, and we welcome end users and vendors to join and contribute.  Our projects include:  Kubernetes, Prometheus, OpenTracing, Fluentd, linkerd, gRPC, CoreDNS, containerd, rkt, and CNI.  

Micah Montgomery Achieves AWS Solution Architect Associate !

Micah Montgomery is a lifelong learner and a well respected professional services delivery engineer with over 300 customer engagements and 20 years in technology integration.  We are grateful he has joined our team to build out a Amazon Web Services delivery practice. 

In his role here at Eplexity he is the lead “Muster Man” for getting team mates and customers trained on Amazon Web Services design, architecture and delivery.  

Micah just completed his Amazon Web Services certification Solutions Architect Associate and is now focused on “Dev/Ops”,  “Sys/Admin”and Solutions Architect Professional by Dec 2017. 

Micah is managing us into shape for  “Advanced Partner” certified for AWS by January 1st.   In addition Micah has just rolled our our custom services catalog for AWS training for the Enterprise training.

Nick Bissel Achieves AWS Solution Architect Associate !



Meet Nick Bissel! 

Nick has been on the team for a year on the Eplexity’s Managed Services Desk for our Managed Services Provider (MSP).  Nick was born and raised in the Boston area and now calls Denver home.    

His career spans five years in IT operations with learning from the front lines of Help Desk support operations.  His knowledge and understanding was predomitaley learned from his huge interests on how things work.  His knowledge of Operating Systems, Networking, Software, Mobile, Servers, VMWare and now AWS Cloud computing makes him well accomplished in his career. 

From Nick  “I’ve been working in the IT field for a few years and have learned a lot, but there is always more to learn. The ever evolving nature of the industry is what makes me so passionate about it. I enjoy learning about new technologies, and old ones alike.

Outside of my professional experience, I have been working on computers for about 15 years. This includes building and upgrading desktops, building media servers, and building a VMWare ESXi server that hosted multiple Windows and Linux server and desktop environments, and the administration of that server through vSphere.” 

Nick’s latest accomplishment is the obtainment of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) certification of AWS Certificated Architect – Associate Level. This test was approximately 200 hours in preparation with AWS labs and learning curriculum.  

We are honored to to have him as part of our team!  Nick now is now enrolled in AWS Security and Networking certifications and is a “Consulting Engineer” apprentice at Eplexity.

Getting your AWS Solutions Architect – Associate completed within 90 days of coming aboard.  We have over 10,000 hours of AWS Projects that we have under contract. 

AWS Delivery Architect –  Responsible for confirming the AWS technical design requirements that meet the business use cases around compute, storage and networking using the AWS Service Catalog. Develops and validates definition file templates for infrastructure as a code strategy and container architectures.  Migration strategy validation of images and acceptance testing for production and DevOps AWS landing zones. Responsible in meeting the design of all security requirements of the project with VPC, ACL, IAM and Key management.  This is a delivery role and will work as a delivery team mate when not doing architecture.  

AWS Software Development Engineer- Responsible for overall development and guidance on JSON, YAML, or XML templates for Infrastructure as a Code strategy. May define their own domain-specific language (DSL) with guidance and approval from Delivery Architect. Responsible for all refactoring of applications when needed using the AWS Service Catalog with focus on Lambda. This is a delivery role and will work as a DevOps delivery team mate when not doing software development.

DevOps Delivery Engineers- Responsible for Infrastructure as Code delivery using standard formats such as JSON, YAML, or XML from the AWS software development engineer.  The steps to carry out the process are captured and documented, as close as possible, into the definition files. Different tools have different terms for this: for example, playbooks (Ansible), recipes (Chef), or manifests (Puppet). Responsible for setting up and testing in Development and Production Landing Zones to meet the Version Control Objectives of the project. Responsible for actual deployment and testing of the software packages to target AWS Landing Zones as described by the Delivery Architect with appropriate container vendor.

Many enterprises have already seen the benefits of speed, agility and flexibility of cloud computing models and Amazon AWS through initial migration pilots or use cases. As they seek to extend usage of AWS more broadly across their organizations, CIOs and IT decision-makers face a series of new, important questions:

What are the highest impact production workloads we should migrate to AWS?
How can we integrate AWS into our service catalog and ITIL / ITSM processes?
How can we use AWS to build a foundation for an IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS) operating model?

Answering these questions is critical for enterprises seeking to leverage the benefits of AWS across their organizations, and provide users the services and capabilities they need to drive innovation and growth through Migration planning.



The Eplexity Amazon AWS Accelerator rapidly provides clients a foundation for delivering ITaaS models while answering critical issues around delivery and support of AWS services.

Description & Objective: The design phase is the key starting point for all of the project components.  During this phase, the Eplexity team will gather information about Client’s AWS requirements to gain an in-depth understanding of operations, networking and data management.

So what does a Project Based Work Plan look like?

Approach: Eplexity will provide a Senior Engineer and Project Manager to perform the following professional services for Client.

Subtask 1 – Eplexity will assign a Project Manager to coordinate the tasks and schedules associated with this project.

Subtask 2 – Eplexity will conduct an initial kick-off meeting with Client to review the plan of work, identify project participants and their roles, and establish initial project timelines.

Subtask 3 -Eplexity will provide requirements for accessing the Client AWS environment as needed to capture information needed to develop the design plan.

Subtask 4 -Verify the virtual infrastructure and components

Subtask 5 -Eplexity will perform a design workshops with the Client to assess networking, security and virtual hardware requirements.  Including, but not limited to:

  • Hybrid-cloud design patterns including tools, and methodologies.
  • Selecting the appropriate AWS service based on data, compute, database, or security requirements
  • Identifying appropriate use of AWS architectural best practices
  • Estimating AWS costs and identifying cost control mechanisms
  • Review and develop use cases relevant to the business with a deep-dive into one use-case.
  • Review essential services and service-delivery models using macro and micro-services architectures.
  • VPC to VPC peering vs Transient VPC architectures.
  • Build foundational skills with your enterprise architecture, infrastructure, security, and DevOps teams orient you to key AWS concepts and services.
  • Design IAM and key management based on existing directory structures, and/or IT security requirements.
  • AWS external connectivity design for scale and according to industry best practices.
  • Determine migration strategy for data to AWS.


Deliverables

Design Documentation and implementation documentation related to the AWS deployment; including:Eplexity will produce a Pre-Deployment Engineering Report (PDER) detailing the results of the AWS design. Modification project timing or cost estimates, resulting from the design, as applicable.

Approach: This is a set of design and build tasks based on the design workshops performed in the previous tasks.  It will include but not be limited to building AWS instances, defining AWS security groups, writing auto scale templates, and related network infrastructure components to operationalize an AWS environment.

Subtask 1 -Establish network connectivity from up to one (1) location into an AWS Region. This can be completed by VPN, Internet via Jump host, or a customer acquired Direct Connect solution.

Subtask 2 -Prepare AWS Account Configuration and integration into existing Active Directory environment should one exist.

Subtask 3 -Migrate up to one (1) server application into AWS. Alternatively Eplexity may build a 3-tier web architecture on-top of AWS Infrastructure should a migration of an application not be feasible.

Subtask 4 -Establish backup of server application in AWS environment. This will involve determining frequency of backups, retention requirements, and policy to rotate backup sets to lower tier volumes for cost savings.

Subtask 5 -Configure auto scaling script based on CPU, or application availability health checks. Perform testing to ensure application is made available in multiple Availability Zones.

Subtask 6 -Perform on-site training of the implemented solution above. This includes one 4 hour session performed by the Eplexity Consulting Engineer.

Deliverables

As-built documentation of the  implementation solution will be provided as well as test runs confirming operational functionality.

Eplexity Cloud Management Platform (CMP)

Eplexity has built a Cloud Managment Platform (CMP) to manage the diverse cloud workloads in our MSP portfolio today.

The Eplexity CMP, which provides a single pane of glass through which an administrator can view all clouds where application deployments might land.

Such tools typically provide governance so that an administrator can dictate who is allowed to deploy what applications where. Metering and billing are important concepts as well so that administrators can put up guiderails for individuals or teams so that they don’t deploy too many resources at once without approvals.

Gone, though, are the days where it takes three weeks and multiple trouble tickets to get a virtual machine (VM). CMPs provide end users with self-service, on-demand resource provisioning while giving administrators a degree of control. An important aspect of CMP functionality is managing the lifecycle of an individual application, which typically starts with the modeling process.
